Please Note:

From 2011-2016, we had an inspiration blog featuring nurseries, baby showers, parties, and portraits that were submitted to us by photographers, designers, and parents. We no longer accept submissions or post new blog content, but we have left the archive here for those who have saved this content, or for new readers looking for inspiration.

Winter Café Themed Birthday Party

This beautiful first birthday party was a DIY labor of love from top to bottom! Kali's mom, photographer Heidi Lau, went above and beyond in hand crafting this special day for her little girl. The winter cafe theme is so lovely and sweet, and we love how it all came about! Read on below throughout the post for the details from Heidi on this special inspiration, and how the party came together:

"For my daughter's 1st birthday party, I wanted it to include her favourite animal, the owl and other elements that reflected her. She's born in the winter and one of the first trips I went to when I was pregnant with her was to Paris, so I decided to create a French themed winter café for her. Once the theme was decided, I wanted to pick colours that felt wintery and French, which included coral, mint, navy blue and gold. From there I made the different decorations to fit the theme, like the 3D snowflakes, chalkboard signs, snowflakes pins to decorate the cupcakes and made French café food that were kid friendly - 'mini' versions of sandwiches, quiches, etc. Everything was DIY by my family and myself, except for the cake. Being a photographer myself, photography for the party was really important to me, I knew I'd be too busy to photograph myself so I had a good friend Justin of Justin Wong Photography document the special day for us."

"I wanted the cake to be the feature of the party, my friend and amazing cake designer Sharon of Bloom Cake Co. and I talked about the design for the cake for awhile. I knew I wanted it to feel wintery and cozy which is where the sweater texture idea came from, of course some French elements and with a knitted snow owl topper to surprise my daughter. It was a lot of elements to incorporate but Sharon did an unbelievable job and brought it all together!"

"Also, for the loot bags for the kids, I wanted it to be something that was reusable and fun, so I monogrammed each bag with the child's first letter of their name and inside I included finger paints with a mini easel, a little node to the art culture of Paris."
